Sitting
Bull and Crazy Horse
|
Sitting
Bull was a famous Sioux warrior and leader. He composed songs and
was an artist. Many of the Sioux people thought of him as their
leader.
|
Sitting
Bull was unhappy with giving up a lifestyle of freedom and moving
to the reservations that were becoming a reality in the mid-1800's.
While performing a Sun Dance, Sitting Bull had a vision about a
battle that would actually take place one month later. He warned
his people about an upcoming battle with the United States Calvary.
This battle was later referred to as the Battle of Little Bighorn.
Major General George Armstrong Custer led his calvary into battle,
but because of Sitting Bull's vision, the Indians were prepared
for the encounter and fought fiercely. Their victory took only 20
minutes against the unsuspecting soldiers.
|
At
the Battle of Little Bighorn, the Indians were led by another great
warrior Chief Crazy Horse. Sitting Bull was not directly involved
in the fight, but his vision had prepared his people for the battle.

Today,
a memorial - not unlike that of Mount Rushmore - is being constructed
in South Dakota to honor the legacy of Chief Crazy Horse.
