Pueblo Bonito

Pueblo Bonito means "Pretty Village" in Spanish. It is the largest and most famous ruin in Chaco Canyon. Pueblo Bonito had about 800 rooms. The only access to the rooms was from the central courtyard which also contained two Great Kivas and 37 smaller kivas.

The photograph below shows what Pueblo Bonito looks like today...

An artist with the help of a computer - and using everything the archaeologists have learned about the Anasazis and about Pueblo Bonito - can give us a much better picuture of what the village looked like about 1000 years ago when it was new.

This is what it would probably have looked like to someone standing on the roof of this grand structure. Notice the rooftop entrances, the entry ladders, the pottery, and the metates for grinding corn.

Take a grand tour as you move through an artist's interpretation of the village of Pueblo Bonito.
